Research Interest

Verena Schünemann's research focus is on the identification and characterization of ancient pathogens that causing major epidemics had an impact on human history. During the past years her work has been centered on the Yersinia pestis genome from the Black Death, medieval Mycobacterium leprae genomes and historic Phytophthora infestans strains that triggered the Irish potato famine. Currently she is studying the evolutionary history of M. leprae in greater details to obtain more information on its potential ancestors and prevalence during the centuries. Furthermore, she is also interested to investigate on other pathogens using DNA enrichment techniques such as array hybridization.
